OK, I'll admit it. I am one of the Electronic Techs that helped bring 8-track to market. Since I was there, I can tell you a fer things that might other- wise be lost into the dustbin of history.

Here is one of them:

The original production Lear 8-track was designed to be repairable.

The plastic posts snapped top and bottom together and that was that!

Naturally, we had to devise a way to disassemble the #!*% things for various reasons. (Management decree!) I fortunatly was not the one who had to come up with the procedure. Here goes:

Take one of those spring loaded center punches. Grind the point off the punch. Make it nice and flat, square ensed, no slant, please! Set the spring tension to maximum. (Screw it all the way down, tight!)

Turn the poor cartridge upside down in your hand. Find the (5?) holes that mate with the holes from the top. Go to work on each hole in turn, punching each several times. Go on to another hole and repeat. A gap will soon

apear between top and bottom. Resist the temptation to pry, or you will damage the cartridge. It will not distroy the function, but it will look ugly!

Continue the punching operation until all the posts are separated from their mating holes.

Expect at least a 25% failure rate. Good Luck!
